If it's good enough for the King of Spain and his family you'll be in good company when you come to ski and snowboard in The Sierra Nevada Mountains, Europe's southern most ski resort.

It's high here too, with five months of snow, 87km of pistes, 79 runs and a snowpark for the boarders. Plenty of chair lifts and 2 cable cars will whisk you to the top of the fabulous Sierra Nevada peaks. There's even night skiing at weekends and on Bank Holidays when the Spanish, who take après ski even more après into the morning than anywhere else, crowd the resort. In the main ski centre of Pradollano in the Parque Natural of Sierra Nevada you will find many English speaking ski instructors and if you don't like partying then certainly choose Monday to Friday for your quiet skiing lessons and discovering the terrain at your leisure.

And, if some of your family don't want to ski all the time or even at all? Well, this is not a one eyed, one-size-fits-all, holiday environment - just 30 minutes from your holiday home in Albunuelas in the Lecrin Valley you'll discover the stunning city of Granada and the magnificent Alhambra Palace an Generalife. The beaches of The Costa De La Luz are only half an hour away, some of the best golf courses in Europe are in this area, Andalucian horses can be ridden in the hills (good enough for riders from 'The Devon and Somerset' to eulogise about), and beautiful vineyards, bird watching and valleys to walk - and in the evening you'll enjoy the smoothest bottles of Rioja and Valdepenas for the price of a cup of coffee at home!.............and then of course there's fishing with Ken.

Everything you need for skiing in the Sierra Nevada can be hired on a daily basis; you don't need to buy a package deal. And the ski schools cater for everyone from beginners, to experts who want to touch up on their style and be shown the layout of the mountains before they venture off. Equipment hire for a day's skiing is an incredible 21Euros a day, snowboards for 24E, or borrow ours for now't and a lift pass for the whole resort is 32E; children, pensioners and the disabled receive one third discount. For a change why not book a sleigh ride across the mountains and enjoy the thrill of been pulled along by a team of handsome huskies.

Well, whether they have or not it's not a problem in the Sierra Nevada because forty-eight snow cannons ensure that there is snow right through the season.

When you drive up each day after your leisurely breakfast in the morning sun of Albunuelas there's plenty of parking and no hassle - this is Spain, relaxed and friendly. Preferably ski during the week unless you're oblivious to traffic and don't mind people-watching in lift queues, because all of southern Spain comes out to play here in the weekend sun which shines pretty well all the time - Take Note: the Sierra Nevada has more hours of sunshine than any other European ski resort; when it snows and the wind blows (rarely) take pleasure in your other activities and avoid Pradallano, the Sierra Nevada's skiing village; but make sure you're there the next day for that life time experience of skiing fresh powder, doing head plants and laughing till you drop.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

In summertime the sunny days and optimum temperatures produce perfect conditions for launching hand gliders, so much so that this sport’s World Championship trials are usually based here. Sierra Nevada is ideal for exploring on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback and the bird watching can be very rewarding.
